It's
a rare treat to see ice like this in Yosemite Valley. For moving water
to freeze this solid, the temperature should remain well below freezing
for at least five to seven days. If it snows during that time it's ruined.
I'd seen and photographed ice in this same area five years previous,
but I wasn't satisfied with my images. When I saw this ice, it was like
a gift I'd known I was going to get, but I had to wait five years to
get it. It was so beautiful, and the light was perfect. I was busy composing
this scene, and anxious to photograph a still pool of perfect, crystaline
ice ten feet to my left when a movement caught my eye. I looked left
in time to see someone heave a small boulder high in the air, and it
exploded the crystal pool. I still wonder why.
